Doing What You Don’t Want, to Get Where You Want to Be

It’s the end of the day and there you are lying in bed, staring deep into that same old ceiling, thinking, “There must be more to this.”

After a long day of all the loops, routines, and systems, it is inevitable to feel so full of it. You tell yourself:

I should be out chasing my dreams! I should be doing what I love, not doing this.

And after all that longing for something greater, what comes after? The same old routine.

There you are again lying in bed, staring deep into that same old ceiling, thinking, “There must be more to this.”

Whether you’re in school or in your first job as a fresh graduate, there always seems to be that sense of longing to be elsewhere — to do something and be someone you actually want. Yet, we may have not realized that this boring routine we feel so stuck in could actually take us to where we want to be. Maybe this education that you drown in 10 months a year, 5 days a week will pay off. Maybe the income that you’ll get from this job that isn’t really what you expected will eventually take you to the dream life you designed in your own head. Sometimes, we need to do something we don’t want, to get to where we want to be.

Accept it.

And no, I don’t mean in purposely settle for what is bad for you. Go find something you can still breathe in, and accept that this is where you are and there is a season and perfect time for everything to take its place. If you’re stuck in school longing to run off, drop everything, and chase after passion, think again. (unless that’s really your calling in life, that’s great!) Hey, who knows? This kind of boring can take you to doing what you love someday.

The fact that you are still going on that not-so-joy ride and persevering through it all is already a part of accepting it. Keep at it and don’t give up.

Live it.

You were not just created to survive, you were made to thrive. Have faith and keep hoping. If you have accepted it, then believe that one day you will get there by living through where you are right now to the fullest. You can’t just go on with the routine and do nothing, waiting for ‘fate’ to bring you elsewhere. Do your best and live your best where you are, knowing that you’re already on your way to your dream.

Look forward to it.

Start living full of hope. Hope is the last thing you want to lose in this season that you are in. Be positive! When you know you’re living the life that will serve as a stepping stone to that dream of yours, there’s nothing wrong with being excited. Hope for the best and embrace where you are.

Sometimes, we have to go through the mud to get to the real walkway. There’s always a journey to explore in each season, and every journey has its dull rocks.

Work hard, be patient, and have faith — you will get there!

A very relevant post, Isa! In a world where we all want the end result immediately, we should learn to toil through the process of getting there. Thanks for the reminder! 🙂

Hey James! Thank you for your encouragement 🙂 That’s right, it is good to embrace the process, too.
